Root Canal Treatment
What Is A Root Canal Treatment?
Root canal treatment, also known as endodontic therapy, is a dental treatment that consists of removing infection from inside an impaired tooth. This treatment also helps protect the tooth from further infections. If you think you need a root canal treatment but are not sure what your options are, this is the guide for you.
What Are The Steps of a Root Canal Treatment?
First of all, it is important to clarify that a root canal is not the treatment itself, rather than a part of the tooth. A root canal is the hollow section of the tooth that consists of blood vessels, nerve tissues and other cells. This part is also known as the “pulp”.
The root canal therapy is usually conducted when the root canal or the pulp is infected and this infection starts to affect the nerve tissue and the root itself. In this case, endodontic treatment is carried through in three main steps and the treatment requires one to three sessions in order to be completed.
1- Cleaning of the Canal: During the first stage of the root canal treatment, the doctor removes everything inside the root canal, cleaning the infectious area and sterilizing the leftover healthy tissues. This step is conducted under local anesthesia, so that the patient does not feel the nerve tissues being touched.
2- Filling the Root Canal: After the cleaning and sterilization is completed, the dentist shapes the hollow area in order to prepare it for the filling. Using small files and irrigation solutions, the tooth is filled with a rubber-like material that acts as an adhesive cement to seal the canal. It is important to note that once the root canal is cleaned out, the tooth reaches a “dead” state, which is why the patient does not feel any pain at this stage.
3- Adding A Crown: Another crucial part of the root canal therapy is knowing that the tooth becomes much more sensitive than it was before, that is why it requires a crown or filling to cover up its vulnerability. At the final stage of the root canal treatment, the endodontist applies a suitable crown or a filling on the empty tooth, completing the root canal procedure once and for all.
